Australia: Rainforest and Reef in Northern Queensland

Apr 23 2007

5 years ago this week I explored the tropical Northeast coastline of Queensland in Australia. This wild and lush coastline offered me a unique opportunity to witness where some of the world's densest rainforest tumbles down to within site of the Great Barrier Reef. I crossed the crocodile-infested Daintree River and travelled as far north as Cape Tribulation. It was here that Captain Cook was shipwrecked way back in 1770. His ship, the Endeavour ran aground in rough seas, just off a prominent headland prompting his comment "It is here our trials and tribulations begin", hence the name Cape Tribulation. It is claimed that the diversity of flora and fauna here is more diverse than anywhere on the planet. Certainly I was made welcome as I entered a cabin in the jungle and had the eyes of a huge funnel-web spiders glaring me from a nearby tree! I highly recommend this place for any visitor to Australia to visit but just be aware that swimming in the sea is not worth the risk at certain times of the year due to killer Box Jelly Fish. However the beaches are gorgeous on a sunny day.
